Probably everyone visiting Japan knows Kyoto and almost everyone go there during there stay in Japan. However, may be not so many people know the details of Kyoto so much.

At first, Kyoto is a prefectural capital of Kyoto prefecture. Which means there are city of Kyoto and Kyoto prefecture. The population of the city is 1.45 million, the ninth populous city in Japan. The density is 1752/km2. City of Kyoto was the third populous city in Japan after Tokyo and Osaka till 1920's census. Kyoto was surpassed by Kobe and later by Nagoya but still maintained third or fourth place till 1960. Population of Kobe declined but population of Yokohama increased and was more than Kyoto. Kyoto did not suffer any huge decline of population but did not also increase either and therefore the population was surpassed by Sapporo, Kobe, Fukuoka and Kawasaki between 1983 and 2015.

On the other hand, Kyoto prefecture's population is 2.55 million, which means more than a half of citizens live in city of Kyoto. The density is 554/km2. The second populous city is Uji, a home of Uji tea, 18 thousand inhabitant. The population is 1/8 of Kyoto but density is higher, 2635/km2. These two cities and located in the southern part of Kyoto prefecture.

City of Kyoto was a capital of Japan between 794 and 1868. The capital moved to Tokyo when Meiji emperor relocated in 1869. Although tourists think Kyoto is a cultural city full of tourist attractions, Kyoto is also an industrial city which has numerous headquarters of major companies including Kyocera and Nintendo.
