Snowing in Japan is quite often in Hokkaido and region along the Sea of Japan. However it is not so often in Tokyo metropolitan area and Osaka metropolitan area. Therefore citizens of these areas have to travel at least 150 km to the nearest ski resorts.
The biggest problem of snowing is that even a few centimeters of snowing can cause huge obstacle in Tokyo. There will be a lot of traffic accidents and trains can be interrupted.
Interruption can be occurred to Shinkansen too. Especially Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen are easily interrupted due to these lines are not along snowing areas. Therefore please be aware when traveling in winter and early April.
On the other, snowing is appreciated in some places such as Shirakawago village and Kenrokuen garden in Kanazawa.
